It always surprises me when people don't understand that the employee-employer relationship is an adversarial one. Unless you're in a democratic co-op or similar your employer is the enemy and you should never forget that. The correct move is to try to screw them in every legal way at every turn because that is what they are doing to you. Never divulge any information that increases your attack surface, always try to extract the most money for the least effort. This is capitalism 101.
You must not allow them to fool you into thinking that these aren't the rules they're playing by. David Sirlin's "Playing to Win" is a good treatise on how to be good, and perhaps the most important lesson is to play the game by the rules as written, and not by some other set of rules that exists only in your head.
(Though in this case the victim was senior enough that I suspect he was playing the game to the best of his ability, trying to humanize himself to gain the upper hand in some other manipulation game and misplayed, kicking things into the legal arena, as one does)
Until this present universe I didn’t really care about that because retaining the job wasn’t a top priority. If you got fired over something like this you took it as a good way to go do something somewhere else.

I would say that the more-exhausting way to live would be to be unaware of this, to accept the “we’re a family here” lie at face value, and to be passed over and screwed over at frequent intervals without knowing or understanding why.

This sounds like an exhausting perspective on the world. I’d rather be hurt by assholes than never allow myself to be vulnerable with anybody. You can mitigate the potential downside without thinking everybody is out to get you or thinking everything is a power game.

It's very culture-dependent. You have to read the room, pick up clues from current behaviour and previous history, and try to calibrate accordingly.
There's a broad correlation between management stupidity and chaotic leadership and toxicity but sometimes you can still end up in pockets of sanity - or insanity if the surrounding culture is good but there are one or more Cluster B types on a team.
I'm vulnerable with plenty of people, just not employers (in general). The incentive structures, especially at a company that's more than a few people are such that it is in their best interest to get as much from you for as little as possible, that's the entire point of the system.
The entire point of capitalism is free enterprise and freedom of association. The way to apply that to employer / employee relationships is to recognize that you are not a serf bound to a single employer and keep half an eye on your options in case you ever tire of your current relationship.

Lets say it is strictly controlled today. What about in six months? What about next year, 2, 5, 10 years from now? There is no guarantee that strict controls that work today will work tomorrow. The only thing that is guaranteed is it will be abused by someone, at some point, even if it is miraculously tightly controlled today (which itself is not true, as we see from number reports of abuse already).

I don't know that you can be absolutist about these things, we cede a lot of power to the government because it actually does make more sense to pay for and manage some things collectively. I'm deeply against surveillance like this but I don't think practically speaking we can get rid of it entirely. I think we should do our best to dismantle it as much as we can but enforcing the great responsibility part of great power on what's left is also a useful strategy.
It has really given us a perfect emblem of the worst capitalism has to offer, I'm not holding my breath but perhaps this backlash will precipitate further change to drive us toward a flatter economy and a society that does a better job of rejecting exploitation and concentration of power. One that more effectively serves humanity and allows us to find a much better global optimum.

Are you seeing the physical AI that has just begun to explode over the last few months? Robots can now literally reliably put your clothes into a washing machine, start it, move them to the dryer, pull them out and fold and stack all of them. They can almost reliably rinse and put your dishes into the dishwasher, start it, then pull them out and put them away into your cabinets. This is all paradigm shifting stuff, and I’ll resist any attempt to stall progress in that space so some people can have a job for a few more months.
A robot that washes your clothes isn’t much use if you can’t afford clothes (let alone the robot) because there’s not enough work left that they can’t do to employ more than a minuscule fraction of us humans and the techno-feudal barons have no interest in distributing let alone redistributing the proceeds.
The US isn’t the only player in the game. In fact, it may not even be the main player in a couple of years. There are people (mainly China) that will do this irrespective of whatever Luddite crap you pull right now. This is happening whether you like it or not. If everyone loses their job, there is going to be something that works itself out. This is not a reason to shit the bed and play dead weight on technological progress.
It’s not hand waving. It’s pointing out like every paradigm shift in the past, there probably isn’t one answer but society progresses and there will be new ways for people to be supported/productive.
What the alternative? Block progress for a few months, lose your lead in a very important race and someone else develops those technologies and you’re back in the same place again, albeit without owning the “means of new production”.

Touche, a more or less decent pool robot cleaner is around 3k and doesn't last more than a few years without changing every part but the case itself. Ok I take it - it operates in somewhat "hostile" environment but the point still stands

It didn't need an LLM or deep learning to do its job because it would randomly crawl around so long that it was on. I don't understand adding complexity, fragility, or cost to a solved problem, but I guess there are enough people who engage in competitive conspicuous consumption to signal status.
Sunday Robotics have pretty much solved folding clothes. It will correctly fold clothes greater than 99% of the time according to them. They have a 3 hour stream of it just folding clothes on their YouTube channel.

YMMV but I measured with a 240hz camera with a mid-high tier computer and a 144hz monitor in 2018 and a nice computer w/ 165hz in 2025 and I never got the huge latencies he experienced, I had click to photon of something like 10 frames max, so 42ms, with the average IIRC being closer to 5 frames.
